Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/5/2024

Petr of Prague, Czech Republic Czech Republic asks...

I still have one situation, please.

S: The goalkeeper catches the ball in the air in his hands and then ball falls to the ground.

A. Even when the goalkeeper is in the air.
B. When the goalkeeper lands on the ground.

Is it ball control? Or does it not reset the offside? Could it be a 'save'?

Thank you....

Petr of Prague, Czech Republic Czech Republic asks...

Hello,

one goalkeeper's question, please.

Law 12:

'A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:
•?the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface(e.g. ground, own body)OR BY TOUCHING IT WITH ANY PART OF THE HANDS OR ARMS, EXCEPT IF THE BALL REBOUNDS FROM THE GOALKEEPER OR THE GOALKEEPER HAS MADE A SAVE

Football terms:

Save
An action by a player to stop or attempt to stop the ball when it is going into or very close to the goal using any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless a goalkeeper within their own penalty area)

Almost every touch under Law 12 seems to be a save. Almost every time the goalkeeper t...

RE: RETIRED PREMIER REFEREE Adult

IBRAHIM ISHIAKU of LOKOJA, KOGI NIGERIA asks...

Good day gentlemen in the house. My question goes like this. If three (3) attackers are in an onside possition and one of them received the ball from a team mate, and the three attackers passes the ball to each other till a goal is scored, till the goal is scored no opponent took possession of any of them. Should the goal stands or there can still be an off-side within them before the goal is scored? Thank you....

Crebs Crem of Zagreb, Croatia asks...

Hello,

Let us think of a scenario that a defender commits a serious foul play on an attacker but the attacking team is one-on-one with the defending team's goalkeeper. I guess the referee would play advantage here. After the referee shows play on, the attacking teams shot it saved by the keeper and the ball is cleared. Even if the defender who committed the serious foul play did not involve in the active play in that period of time, can the referee stop play, send the defender off and restart the play with a act with the ball or press the ball until the moment that the ball is out of play. ...

Law 17 - The Corner Kick 5/3/2024

Edson of San Jose, California United States asks...

What is the proper restart when a player takes a quick corner kick but at the last moment before the player touches the ball the Assistant Referee on the side where the corner kick is taken notices that the ball is not in the corner arc. Then, what is the restart if after the ball is played, the AR raises his flag but the center referee doesn’t stop play and a goal is scored. Then the center notices the flag before he awards the goal. ...

RE: Comp High School

Peter of Stockton, CA USA asks...

After watching the Liverpool / West Ham game I am very confused and hope that you can help me understand. In the final minutes the keeper releases the ball Gakpo runs on the ball and then the referee stops play. Before play was stopped the keeper was adjusting his socks. I am thinking that the keeper was confused and thought there was a free kick given, but should the referee stop play because a player was confused? The referee then restarted play with a al a free kick restart....

RE: Competitive High School

Ken Craig of Cookeville, TN United States asks...

If a defending player intentionally passes the ball back to their keeper and the keeper unintentionally kicks the ball into the air and it goes backwards due to the spin on the ball. As an offensive player goes toward the ball the keeper grabs the ball with his hands. The offensive player never touches the ball. Is it legal for the keeper to pickup his muffed kick in this situation?...

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/25/2024

Larry of Danville, California United States asks...

I wish I could get as fast and as thoughtful of a response from people who are being paid to do their job. You guys are great. However, I have a couple of follow up comments.

Jason, after a search of the Laws from the last several years I only found the term “non-deliberate” mentioned in the 2019-2020 laws, in conjunction with accidental handling being an infraction when a goal is scored. Meaning non-deliberate was the same as accidental. Did I miss something? And personally, I think the Law writers have been the ones “overthinking” handling, not me. They continually modify the wording and tweak the Laws to describe handling, while I have always thought it was judgmental but still pretty straight forward, by simply asking if the ...
