Question Number: 21611

Law 4 - Players Equipment 7/2/2009

Al of Strathroy, ON CANADA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 21603

Just a follow-up comment on headbands. In most competitive matches in our area, handbands are removed. The usual exception is if they are clearly worn in cold weather to keep ears warm. They are unnecessary and could fall around neck where they can become dangerous. Girls needing to hold hair back are encourage to wear an elastic band and/or prewrap -- a fine material that tears easily if deliberately or accidentally caught on something.

Has the panel has seen similar practices in their experience?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Another reason to wear a headband is to soak up the sweat, and keep it from running into your eyes. Some of those bands might cover part or all of the ears.

Oh sorry ladies, I forgot you don't sweat, you glisten.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The headbands described in the question covered the ears so I would assume they were being worn due to cold weather. I'd be very suspicious of a player wearing a headband covering the ears in 95 degree heat in Georgia. I don't know official Canadian or USSF policy on headbands, but around here in hot weather, many players wear them. I think it less dangerous if they can see and headbands keep sweat out of the eyes.
