Question Number: 12409

Law 6 - Assistant Referee 3/20/2006

RE: Club AR Adult

Pat Titzer of Centennial, CO USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 9236

What should the AR do while this type of play is developing? Stand where you were when the last attacking player touched the ball, wait, and look downfield to determine if the offside player gets in the play OR note your position, and run down the field with the ball looking for the offside player to get in the play and then flag the offside and return to the point where you were when the ball was last touched by the attacking player to mark the position of the ball for the IFK. If the answer is the first, it can sometimes be very difficult for the AR to see down the field through a number of players to determine the actions of the offside player.

Thanks,

Pat

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

You stay with play until you MAKE that decision. Once the offside is realized you raise the flag and return to the spot where the offside player was WHEN the ball was last touched by the teammate. Remember to not prejudge what could happen let things unfold until you are 100% convinced the infringement is there! You stay with the second last defender or with the ball which ever is closest to the goal line on your half of the pitch, that is your main duty for the whole match.
Cheers
