Question Number: 23881Law 7 - Match Duration 9/6/2010RE: College Adult John Leavy of Cranford , NJ USA asks...Can a goal be scored after the final whistle has been blown if the ball is already in flight at the time of the whistle.
I was informed by a young grade 5 referee that once the blll is in flight and you blow the whistle to end the game the goal stands even if it enters the goal after the whistle .??? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi John
Absolutely not. Once the referees decides to end play that is it and no further play is allowed after the signal even if the ball in in flight. I suggest that you correct the young Grade 5 referee on this as it is a serious error in Law.
My advice is not to stop the game in these situations. If the referee has allowed it to get that far then another few seconds should be found to see the outcome of flight of the ball. If the whistle is blown then the game is over and no goal can be scored.
Some sports have a rule that the ball must 'go dead' to finish the game after the final whistle. Soccer is not one of them.
