Question Number: 23868

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/2/2010

RE: competive Adult

RAUL REYES of guadalajara, jal, jal mexico asks...

can a goalkeeper be cautioned by touching the ball with his hands when has been kicked by a teammate or be sent off by denying an opposing team a goal??

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The goalkeeper may not be sent off IF the ball was inside the penalty area (a caution still may be appropriate).

If the ball is outside the penalty area, however, the goalkeeper can be sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity by handling the ball.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

A goalkeeper inside her own penalty area can NEVER, under any circumstances, be sent off for handling. The exemption is specifically written in Law 12, and it has been that way ever since Denying an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity was specified as a unique bullet point.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Raul
The answer is no and indeed the goalkeeper cannot even be cautioned for touching the ball with his hands if it is deliberately kicked to him by a team mate or preventing the ball entering the goal when it has been kicked by a team mate.
