Question Number: 23851

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 8/29/2010

RE: rec Under 16

Jerry Grayson of Everett, Wa usa asks...

If a full back - passes the ball with his feet to the goalie and the goalie picks up the ball with his hands inside the penalty box what is the correct call? Is it a direct kick or indirect or a penalty kick?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Gerry
The goalkeeper may not touch the ball with his hand inside the penalty area after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team mate. The correct call is an indirect free kick form where the GK touched the ball.
It cannot be a direct free kick or a penalty. Indeed there cannot be an attacking direct free kick inside the penalty area for any offence. It must be a PK.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

When the keeper touches the ball inside the penalty area, it can NEVER result in a penalty kick or direct free kick. If it is a foul, it will be one of four infringements by a keeper that results in a indirect free kick.
