Question Number: 23742Law 11 - Offside 8/6/2010RE: Under 19 Steven of Sydney, Nsw Australia asks...When offside restarted after a controled pass ??? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol I'm not sure I understand your question, Steven. The restart for offside is an indirect kick at the location the player was when the ball was last touched by a teammate. This may be a very different place from where the player was when the infraction was called, when he became involved in play. Or maybe you're asking about this. If an a Blue player controls the ball, then offside ends for the Red team and begins for the Blue. But if a Blue player just deflects the ball, offside would still apply for Red - and would also apply for Blue from that time forward.

The moment 'control' of the ball passes to the other side offside consideration changes to that team in control of the ball. Rebounds, miskicks & deflections are not control of the ball and therefore do not reset offside. They can however be considered the touch that plays the ball to a team mate in an offside position and that is offside as the 'pass' to a team mate does not have to be controlled.
