Question Number: 23740Other 8/4/2010RE: Under 15 Andre Pelaez of San Bernardino , California USA asks...If a ball is kicked into the stands during the course of a game can a fan keep it the ball? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Andre No, the fan cannot keep the ball legally and if he does it is stealing. In some matches a fan decides that he wants a souvenir of the game and he decides to hold on to the match ball and conceal it. In matches that use a 'multiball' procedure the ball is replaced almost instantly with a replacement that are placed around the field of play. In the case of the game that only has one match ball and a team is getting beat with 5 minutes to go, do you think that the supporters of that losing team, close to the ball will allow the person to keep the ball?? Also approved match balls are expensive and teams do not take kindly to them being stolen. It is also expected that the ball is returned promptly in the interest of fair play.

Players, owners, managers and fans expect other fans to return balls to the field - as quickly as possible. Do the right thing!
