Question Number: 23674Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 7/16/2010RE: District Adult F. Nick of Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada asks...In a game that I was watching, a defending team was allowed a throw-in in their half of the field. The defender threw the ball towards his goalie. The goalie received the throw-in by foot (as if he were a player) outside the penalty area. The goalie then used his feet to dribble the ball into the penalty area and at this point he picked up the ball with his hands and punted the ball downfield. I do believe this is not allowed. True or False? Using the same descriptive scenario above, the goalie is not allowed to pick up the ball in his penalty area after dribbling the ball into the penalty area from a pass from one of his team mates. Part B- Question The attacking team goalie punts the ball from his own penalty area. The ball carries a long distance into the other team's half of the field. The ball bounces in behind the last defenders and a attacking players breaks lose toward the free ball. The defending goalie seeing that the ball is free and the attacking player is making his way towards the ball for a break away comes out of his penalty area and helps to bring the lose ball into his penalty area (using his feet). The goalie then picks up the ball with his hands (inside the penalty area). The potential break-away from the attacker is thwarted. The defending goalie then punts the ball downfield. I believe this is allowed. True or False? Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Part A. Improper. A keeper may not handle a ball from a teammate's thrown-in or deliberate kick even if the keeper dribbles the ball into the penalty area. Part B. Proper. A keeper may handle a ball last kicked by an opponent even if the keeper dribbled or kicked the ball into the penalty area.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Part A This is an offence as the GK cannot pick the ball up from a team mate's throw in. The restart is an IDFK from where the GK picked the ball up. If the throw in was from an attacker there is no offence. Part B No offence has been committed here and play continues. It is only an offence if the ball has been deliberately kicked to the GK by a team mate
