Question Number: 23564

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/27/2010

RE: Premiere Under 19

Paul Savoie of plymouth , mi USA asks...

I know the rule that if a player deliberately denies a goalscoring opportunity with his hand he is given a red card. what i am curious about is that after the red card is given is the goal awarded to the team who was denied?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Paul
If a goal has been awarded then nothing has been denied so there is no need for disciplinary action to be taken for the deliberate handling.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Nope. If the goal was denied, it can't be scored - that's why the penalty is so severe. Law 10 tells us a goal can only be scored if the whole ball crosses the goal line, under the crossbar and between the goalposts - assuming of course that the referee team saw it do so. (Poor England!)

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

No. The restart is based on the handling foul: a penalty kick if the handling occurred inside the penalty area; a direct free kick if it occurred outside the PA.

If, despite the handling, the ball still enters the goal (and the referee allows advantage), the goal counts. The lucky defender will not be sent off (because the team scored the goal) and probably will get off with just a caution.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

No! The penalty kick or dfk occurs next. The referee must be careful not to whistle to early in case the ball still makes it in (advantage).
