Question Number: 23524

Law 16 - Goal Kick 6/21/2010

RE: rec Under 11

Jerry Coughter of Lincoln, VA USA asks...

Can a team take a quick restart on a goal kick? That is, take the goal kick while players of both teams are still in the penalty area.

And assuming the quick restart is allowed, is the ball in play if it hits a player before it leaves the penalty area? My first reaction is to say no, the ball must leave the area, but shouldn't the kicking team be at risk if they choose the quick restart?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Referee Coughter
Yes the team can take a quick restart on a goal kick. It is not necessary for all players from the attacking side to be outside the penalty area. If the ball hits a player from either team inside the penalty area the kick is retaken.
