Question Number: 22924Law 16 - Goal Kick 3/9/2010RE: Intermediate Under 17 Will of Corona, Ca USA asks...Scenario: Defender kicks a goal kick. It is so windy that the ball travels up in the air, goes beyond the penalty area, and then the wind carries the ball backward. Without anyone from either team touching the ball, the wind carries the ball past the goal line into the net. The referee signals a goal. I say it is not a goal because Law 16 says that a goal must be scored by an opposing player as a result of a goal kick. An opposing player never touched the ball and the call should have been a corner kick for the opposing team. I am correct? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol You are correct, it is not a goal. There is a link to a video of just such a play in Q#22891 and Q#22893.
