Question Number: 22912Law 5 - The Referee 3/8/2010RE: Under 17 Dave of Des Moines, IA US asks...This question is a follow up to question 20571 Sorry about all the 'hurricane' questions. Just a few more; My question is about playing advantage when a goalie illegally touches the ball before it goes into the net. Would it be true that if it were a free kick or goal kick, and the goalie 2nd touches the ball, then you couldn't play advantage since those violations are not under law 12? But you could play advantage on a throw in to goalie (handling the ball) or goalie handling the ball after releasing the ball into live play? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Advantage cannot be played on a double touch violation. If it is directly from a GK or a FK then a goal cannot be scored. Its pretty hard to do anyway and it needs a hurricane as we have seen. However I believe that if the situation warranted it then the referee has some discretion to do so. An example would be a goal kick that is miskicked just outside the PA by the goalkeeper. Goalkeeper and forward then chase the ball down with the goalkeeper getting there a fraction quicker and kicks the ball which cannons off the attacker into the goal. IMO the best decision is a goal rather than an IDFK for a double touch violation. Generally though DTs don't really present as an advantage situations anyway by their nature. You are correct in that the referee can play advantage on a keeper touching the ball with his hands from a TI or touching the ball with his hands after releasing it from his possession.

Unfortunately in that case it was not touched, but they counted the goal. The goalkeeper handling the ball after it has been kicked or thrown to him is a Law 12 violation, so you can apply advantage. So too is a goalkeeper second-touch after he releases the ball into play (that would be a good gale too). If it goes in the goal after the touch, give the score! But a second-touch after a goal kick or free kick is not a Law 12 violation, no advantage.
