Question Number: 21602

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/30/2009

RE: Rec Under 15

Justin of Montreal, Quebec Canada asks...

Hi guys,

Just a quick question about Laws 12 and 13. I was refereeing a 14-year-old boys' game the other day when a player decided to direct some choice words in my direction (worthy of a caution for dissent, according to Law 12). However, the ball was in play when this occurred.

Nonetheless, since this player had been a considerable nuisance throughout the game up to this point, I decided to stop play to caution the player immediately.

My question would be, how would the restart proceed, according to Law 13? My guess would be an indirect free kick for the opposing team, from the location of the ball when play was stopped. Is this correct?

Thanks!

You're close!

The indirect free kick is awarded where the offence occurred. This is covered by Law 12, not Law 13 - it's the last of the indirect free kicks, just before the cautions get a mention.

Law 12 gives you what you need. If you stop play for misconduct only, the restart is always an IDFK from the point of the misconduct not where the ball was
