Question Number: 21559Law 11 - Offside 6/18/2009RE: Under 15 Harman of petaluma , CA united states asks...my question is so if a goal is scored and there is a player of the team that socored the goal is offside but the player didn't interfere with the play is it a goal? one more question! when is a penalty kick, ifk, corner kick, direct free kick awarded whats the difference between them? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol 1) Yes, of course it's a goal. Offside position alone is not to be punished; the player must become involved before offside is called. 2) Direct free kicks are given for the 10 reasons listed in Law 12. Any of those 10 offenses committed by a team inside its own penalty area generates a penalty kick for the opponents. Indirect free kicks are for the 8 items listed in Law 12, plus numerous other infractions scattered through the Laws. You're a referee and you don't know this? You really need some more study before you get back out onto a field to officiate a game.

View Referee Steve Montanino profile Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Herman, if you are really a referee and don't know the differences among penalty kicks,IFKs, corners and DFKs and when to award them, you really need to retake a certification course before you referee any games as you were not taught enough to do a competent job. Also ALL referees should know that it is not an offense to be in offside position.
