Question Number: 19342

Law 5 - The Referee 6/10/2008

Avery Haskell of op, ks usa asks...

This question regards older jerseys such as the fuschia one. Can someone give some info on the yellow grid, fuschia grid, and old black jerseys? Possibly post some links with pics and whatnot? I might buy a fuschia short sleeve on ebay to wear when doing 1 man indoor games for fun. I might even be interested in the old yellow. Anyone ever seen the fuschia and yellow jersey material flag-bags?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Whatever you want to spend your money on. Just don't wear an unapproved uniform in a USSF-affiliated game.

I have a flag bag made out of the fuchsia material. (Note the spelling, named after the flower, which was named after botanist Leonhart Fuchs - be careful pronouncing his name!) Anyway, I was given the flags and bag as a gift shortly after the fuchsia color was replaced with the yellow. As I opened it, I was at first dismayed that my family had perhaps gotten me a useless gift. When I showed it to the newly minted Grade 9's that were my AR's last week, they were shocked that any referees would have ever worn that color!

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

You are better served by filling out the 5 long and 5 short jerseys that are currently approved for wear. Once you have those and duplicates in yellow, 3 pairs of socks, 3 trousers, extra flags, extra whistles, extra footwear, rain gear and all the other stuff in a professional referee's kit bag you'll have spent near $1,000. If you have anything left over get yourself to some clinics and start your education as a referee. When you start getting the men's amateur matches so often you have to give back some assignments use some discretionary spending money and get a GPS. Leave the historical memorabilia collecting to rich folks.
