Question Number: 19281

Law 4 - Players Equipment 6/5/2008

RE: select Under 16

Brad Mallmann of Plymouth, Wisconsin U.S.A asks...

can a soft arm cast be worn in a match?

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

It depends on: 1) the referee's opinion as to whether or not it is safe for you and/or the other players on the field; 2) whether or not the state youth association has a local rule regarding the use of casts in games; 3) whether or not a "soft" cast is exempt from state cast rules, if such exist. Of all of these, the most critical is the referee's opinion - if the state allows casts, the referee can always say no, you can't play. And different referees will judge it differently. So, we can't give you a definitive answer, sorry. Ah, and the referee can decide at any point in a game that the cast is now considered a danger, and the wearer may no longer play.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The term "soft cast" is an oxymoron. If it's soft and padded throughout it's not a cast. If it's a cast with padding over it to make it soft it may not be allowed depending on your locality and the opinion of the referee. In Georgia, no cast may be allowed regardless of padding in youth soccer matches.

Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy

Brad, casts are allowed on the field of play if, in the opinion of the referee it does not present a danger to any player. Some asociations have taken it upon themselves to futher deal with casts and therefore you should check with your league. You could try: http://www.wiyouthsoccer.com/site3.aspx Generally speaking all equipment is checked by the referee of the day and they are trained to make a call based on saftey. It is possible that one referee says safe and another says no. Stiil, players have to abide by that ref's decision.
