Question Number: 19150

Law 4 - Players Equipment 5/20/2008

RE: Rec Under 14

Dave of Columbus, OH USA asks...

What are the rules of the game as pertains to religious head coverings? At a recent middle school game (ages 13-14), a referee and coach were conflicted about a middle eastern head covering (longer hair bundled on top of the head with a covering over it).

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Your school may have their own rules, as they probably don't play under the Laws of the Game.

Players are prohibited from wearing any equipment which may be harmful to themselves or others. In certain instances this could include a Muslim hijab, due to the long flowing ends which could become entwined. The USSF position is that accomodation should be made for clothing required by a religion, as long as it is safe.

There are companies making non-traditional headwear that is suitable for sports, yet still provides the modesty required by the religion. Search for "hijab sports".
