Question Number: 19079

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/13/2008

RE: High School

Mike Ruhnke of Carroll, Iowa United States asks...

A shot is made at the goalie, he hits the ball to the ground in front of him with his hands. He then stands and waves his hands around the ball as to pick it up(he does not touch the ball). He doesn't pick up the ball up until he is challenged.
Is this a type of infraction? Like delay of game, or parring.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

That seems OK to me. He was trying to deceive the opponent into thinking he had picked up the ball so they would not challenge. That is permitted because the offensive player may still challenge for the ball UNTIL the keeper actually takes possession of it into his hands.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

That's up to the referee. If in his opinion, the keeper could have caught the ball but instead hit the ball to the ground, then this would be a parry and the keeper would not be allowed to handle the ball again until it touched another player.
