Question Number: 19052Law 11 - Offside 5/10/2008RE: recreation Under 15 Dave Southward of Blissfield, MI USA asks...Can a player be offsides on a direct kick? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Corner, goal, pk and kick off are also types of DFKs We have two restarts that exempt the offside position, corner and goal kicks. On a Pk one cannot be offside to start same as a kick off. On the opposing DFKs you can be offside positioned but if they kick the ball to you again it does not matter as the ball was not played by a team mate. On an attacking DFK or indfk for that matter offside criteria will apply at the moment that ball is kicked as that is the determining touch to judge offside position. Now if the opposition accomadates you by keeping at least two opponents closer to their opposing goal or you start a run inside your own half when the dfk is taken to arrive in behind the 2nd last opponent after the kick again no offside. So yes one can or could but not automatically and in some instances not at all. cheers

So there is no problem if you are in an offside position when one of your team takes a free kick (Law 13 free kick, not one of the special free kicks). However if you become involved in play following that free kick, then offside will be called.

Please note that it is not an offense to be in offside position only
