Question Number: 19001Law 11 - Offside 5/5/2008RE: High school Under 17 mark of chicago, IL USA asks...If there is a ball played to a running player who is offsides but the ball is deflected off of a defender to the offsides player. Is this person offsides or not. The defender never had possession. Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino A mere deflection of the ball by an opponent does not reset offside so this player should be flagged for an offside offense

View Referee Keith Contarino profile Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy Mark, The thing to consider is who passed the ball? The person who deflected it really didn't "pass" the ball. Now the player in question was always offside - I guess you wanted to know if he should be penalised for being in that position. YES he should be.
